Shadow Fight 2 is a role-playingfighting game developed by Nekki.[2] It is the second installment in the Shadow Fight series and was soft-launched on October 22, 2013. The full game was released worldwide on May 1, 2014, for both the Android and iOS operating systems.[3] It was then released to Windows 8 and 8.1 on January 26, 2015,[4] and to the Nintendo Switch as a downloadable Nintendo eShop title on September 13, 2018.[5]

Game)

The game uses the same graphics as Shadow Fight, which depict the player character and their opponents as 2Dsilhouettes. The player starts out unarmed, but as they level up, they unlock more advanced weapons, armors and helms. The title introduces several new elements to the series, such as ranged weapons, magic and a multiplayer mode, where players can work together to defeat various bosses in the Underworld. The single-player campaign follows a warrior known only as 'Shadow', who is reduced to a faceless silhouette after opening the Gates of Shadow—a pathway to the 'Shadow World'— and being exposed to its Shadow Energy. To recover his lost honor and physical body, Shadow must search the world for six demons that escaped from the Shadow World when the gates were opened, and defeat them in combat.

Shadow Fight 2 received a large number of positive reviews upon release and is regarded as one of the best fighting games for mobile devices.[6]

Gameplay[edit]

Shadow Fight 2 is a 2D fighting game in which players must win the best of three matches against computer-controlled opponents.[7] The game also has RPG elements that let players upgrade their armor, weapons, skills and magical abilities.[7] The game's characters are entirely silhouettes, but the animations are realistic and physics-based.[7]

The player earns gold throughout the game that can be used to buy weapons.[7] The game contains seven different provinces, each with a main boss.[7] The player can enter only five fights before their energy must be replenished, which is done by waiting, paying real money, or watching a limited number of ads. These games may come to a series end after which the full game is completed.[7]

Achievements are a core part of Shadow Fight 2. Players are rewarded for completing the story as well as certain tasks.

Plot[edit]

Based on its aesthetics, the game appears to take place in a fictionalized version of Feudal Japan. In the game's openning cinematic, the protagonist, Shadow, explains that he was searching for a worthy opponent when he came across the Gates of Shadows, a pathway to the Shadow World. When he opens the Gates, the six demons that were imprisoned on the other side were released and Shadow's body was enveloped by the mystical Shadow Energy, which turned him into a faceless silhouette. Believing that sealing the Gates will allow him to regain his physical body, Shadow set out to defeat the demons and retrieve the seals they are guarding, which can be used to close the Gates.

Shadow is aided in his quest by his former Sensei, a blacksmith named May, and later a conman named Sly. The group travels across the region, stopping in the towns where the demons have taken residence. Shadow participates in various tournaments and battles to prepare himself for the fights with the demons and their bodyguards. The six demons that Shadow has to face are, in order:

  • Lynx, the leader of an assassin group called The Order
  • Hermit, a powerful wizard and the headmaster of a fighting & magic school
  • Butcher, the leader of a juvenile gang
  • Wasp, the Pirate Queen and daughter of the former Pirate King
  • Widow, who can seduce virtually any man with her charms
  • Shogun, a disgraced rōnin-turned-warlord

After defeating all the demons and taking their seals, Shadow arrives at the Gates. The six demons follow him to try and stop him from closing the Gates, but he overpowers them. Shadow then seals the Gates, but Titan, the ruler of the Shadow World, attacks him and captures May before the Gates close. Unable to reopen the Gates, Shadow, still a silhouette, returns to defeat the demons once again and destroy their seals, ignoring their warnings about Titan. With the seals destroyed, the Gates briefly reopen, allowing Shadow to travel to the Shadow Realm on his own.

Shadow, weakened by his travel through the Gates, is attacked and almost defeated by Shroud, a servant of Titan, but Kali, a member of an underground resistance that opposes Titan's reign, arrives to rescue him. Shadow is taken to the resistance's undergroung base, where the resistance's leader, Cypher, informs him that Titan is, in fact, an alien warlord who has conquered many worlds, including this one, and is planning to take over Shadow's world as well. The resistance is made up of aliens whose worlds were conquered by Titan, and Shadow proceeds to earns their respect by defeating them all in combat. Once Cypher is defeated, he remarks that Shadow might be the warrior prophesied to defeat Titan, and has Kali take him to the Ancient, a powerful being who has trained many warriors (including Shroud) and whose kind was exterminated by Titan. To find the Ancient, Shadow first locates and defeats Cronos, a robot created by Cypher for this purpose, which eventually turned rogue. Using Cronos's tracking technology, Shadow and Kali find the Ancient, who is initially reluctant to help, but eventually comes to believe in Shadow's powers after he passes all his tests, consisting of fights against the spirits of fallen warriors and Ancient himself.

The Ancient disguises Shadow as one of Titan's soldiers and suggests that he get close to Titan by participating in a tournament, whose winner will become Titan's newest elite trooper. Halfway through the tournament, Shadow is called back to the resistance hideout, which has been attacked by Shroud and another warrior, Justice. He defeats Shroud and is confronted by Justice, revealed to be a brainwashed May. After May is captured by the resistance, Shadow and Kali head to Titan's Citadel, where Shadow defeats Titan's bodyguards, all of whom are dark alternate versions of himself. Meanwhile, Ancient leaves the Shadow World to 'fight a war' elsewhere. May escapes and arrives to kill Shadow, but he defeats and frees her from Titan's control. While Kali takes May back to the Gates of Shadows, Shadow and Titan engage in a final battle. Once Titan is defeated, his body explodes, destroying the citadel. Shadow is caught in the explosion, but survives and manages to return to the Gates before they are destroyed, regaining his physical body in the process. Shadow is reunited with May, and the two embrace before walking away, unaware that they are being followed by a shadow that has survived the Gates' destruction.

Old Wounds[edit]

Old Wounds is a bonus storyline exclusive the Special Edition of the game that centers on a younger Sensei's encounters with younger versions of the six demons. The battles featured in this mode cannot be replayed.

One day, Sensei runs into the Prince of Ivor City, who is being pursued by Lynx. Sensei defeats Lynx, chasing him away, while the Prince explains that he was kidnapped from his palace by unknown assailants, but managed to escape. When he was kidnapped, the Prince overheard that his soldiers are undergoing training from Hermit, so he and Sensei go to confront him, convinced that he was somehow involved in the Prince's men's betrayal. Hermit admits to betraying the Prince and hiring Lynx to kill him, but claims he did so for his school's future. After Sensei defeats him, Hermit reveals that the Prince's right-hand man, Shogun, ordered him to train his soldiers in exchange for protection from Butcher's gang, whom Hermit suspects are the ones who kidnapped the Prince. When Sensei and the Prince confront Butcher, he reveals that the latter paid him to let him go and to tell him where to find a magical Sphere. While the Prince flees, Sensei defeats Butcher, who informs him of a woman that had convinced Shogun to betray the Prince in exchange for the Sphere, which can grant anyone who wields it magic powers.

Butcher points Sensei to the docks where the Sphere is about to be brought in by boat. There, he is confronted by Wasp, who reveals that the Sphere had been retrieved by someone the day prior. After being defeated, Wasp reveals that the woman mentioned by Butcher is Widow, who is seeking revenge against the Prince for rejecting her love, and that the Sphere will turn anyone who uses its power into Widow's slave. Sensei finds and defeats Widow before persuading her to tell him what happened to the Sphere. Widow reveals that the Prince took it and used its power to defeat Shogun, whom he plans to execute for treason. Sensei arrives in Ivor City, where the Prince, driven mad by power, orders a mind-controlled Shogun to kill him. Following Shogun's defeat, the Prince fights Sensei himself, but is also defeated. The Ancient then arrives and explains to a confused Sensei that he has temporarily stopped the flow of time to take the Sphere back to where it belongs, and that its presence here was caused by the Gates of Shadows' instability. Before leaving, he ensures Sensei that no one, including him, will remember anything from these events by tomorrow.

The game's plot takes place several years after its predecessor. People have gotten used to the presence of Shadow Energy in their lives and have learned to harness it, both in war and in their day-to-day lives. Unfortunately, this positive attitude is not shared by everyone. Powerful Legion is preparing for an attack on the Dynasty's lands in order to put an end to what they see as the 'Shadow Threat'. On the other hand, the people of the Dynasty believe that, with the correct use, the power can help humanity solve a lot of problems. Later in the game, a third faction, the Heralds, emerges from the shadows, frightening both the Dynasty and the Legion with their vast knowledge of Shadow Energy.

Players start the game as a new recruit for the Shadow Squad, an offshoot of the Legion that does not refrain from using Shadow Energy. As they progress further, they come in contact with the other factions and can experiment, mix-and-match equipment, learn new tactics and fighting styles.
